Jim Sammons La Jolla Kayak Fishing
A San Diego California native, Jim has spent most of his life on or near
the water. Whether, during his youth, paddling his inflatable raft on
San Diego bay, pin heading for free trips on the local sport boats or
paddling his long board out to the kelp beds of La Jolla. Jim always
found a way to get on the water in a manner that would not break his
very small bank account. Receiving his first kayak as a gift, he has
never looked back; starting La Jolla Kayak Fishing guide service in
1995, he has been on the leading edge of this fast growing sport.
Jim holds the distinction of landing the first, and only California
caught Marlin from a kayak. He has also landed Thresher sharks up to two
hundred pounds and a personal best Yellowtail of forty one pounds all
while fishing the La Jolla coast from his Ocean Kayak. Some of Jim's
proudest accomplishments are guiding more clients to Billfish from a
kayak than any other kayak fishing guide in the world, starting the La
Jolla Kayak Fishing Billfish club, and setting a kayak fishing record
with a 60 pound bull Dorado.
Jim has worked closely with Ocean Kayak™, from conception to finished
product, to make the finest line of fishing kayaks on the market,
starting with the Prowler 15 and the new Prowler Trident series of
boats.
Jim also has been working with Shimano on their line of kayak fishing
items including the new Bristol Bay live bait system. Everyone was very
excited when the bait tank won best new product at the 2007 ICAST
show.
Jim is an IGFA certified, and California Department of Fish and game
licensed guide and runs La Jolla Kayak Fishing Adventures instructional
trips locally as well as guiding trips to northern and southern Baja. A
contributing writer with several fishing publications Jim loves the
opportunity to give tips and relay stories of successful kayak fishing
adventures. Kayak fishing is Jim's passion; addiction or some would a
say sickness with no cure. He has managed to turn that passion into a
career through guiding and his own line of kayak fishing accessories
available through his Web site Kayak4Fish.com.

Matt Moyer
A La Jolla Kayak Fishing affiliate
Matt Moyer started fishing at a young age, his father Steve taught him
to fish the freshwater as soon as he was old enough to hold a rod,
moving up to the salt water species such as bay bass and halibut when he
reached his early teens. It wasn't long before Matt was out fishing his
father during their regular outings. Matt and his father had dreams of
owning a boat together but could not afford one, so they did what ever
they could to get offshore, including paddling their long boards outside
the kelp to get at the bigger fish. In February of 2001, Matt's father
bought them a pair of kayaks and that is when the adventure began. Since
that time Matt has become one of the elite bay bass fisherman winning
many of the local kayak fishing tournaments. If he did not win, you
could usually find him placing in the top five, out of over a hundred
entrants. No stranger to offshore kayak fishing Matt has caught
Yellowtail and several White Sea Bass in the 30lb class with his largest
going 44lbs. One of Matt's most exciting days on the water was when an
80lb. Mako Shark, which he landed then released, towed him for
forty-five minutes.
Matt is also an experienced Baja fisherman catching Roosterfish, Jack
Crevalle, and assisting in the catch and release of two large Striped
Marlin. Matt will be working with La Jolla Kayak Fishing as an affiliate
guide, assisting Jim Sammons with larger groups during bay and offshore
trips. Jim has taken Matt under his wing and together plan on
introducing more people to the rapidly growing sport of ocean kayak
fishing. Matt along with Jim will be working closely with Ocean Kayak,
in advisory rolls, to ensure the best fishing kayaks available.
Matt's enthusiasm and passion for the sport combined with his fishing
prowess makes him a great addition to the La Jolla Kayak Fishing
family.
Matt can be reached via the La Jolla Kayak Fishing
Bay
Bass forum,
which he moderates.
Jeff "Rhyno" Krieger
Owner: RhynoBar.com
A La Jolla Kayak Fishing affiliate
Born and raised on the island of Oahu, Jeff was introduced to the ocean
at an early age. At his island home he learned to paddle outrigger
canoes, kayaks or anything else that would get him on the water. Of
course, that is also, where he got his first taste of fishing. The
Krieger family relocated to the mainland in 1972 settling in Santa
Barbara. One of the original, modern day kayak anglers, Jeff
started guiding in 1990.
Jeff has been featured in two episodes of the Inside Sportfishing
television show, Threshers Yak Style and Marlin from the Kayak, winning
the Telly award for “Special Guest Host”, for the Thresher
video.
Jeff will be giving kayak fishing tips and reports on, "Western
Fishing and Boating Radio Show" on am 1540, heard every Thursday
night, 8-10 Pm, in the Los Angeles area starting Jan 2005. A regular
seminar speaker at the Fred Hall Boat and tackle shows, and many fishing
clubs, Jeff loves spreading the word about our sport through speaking
engagements or via the articles he has written for publications such as
Western Outdoor News, Pacific Coast Sportfishing, Rabid Angler and
others.
A CDF&G licensed guide and member of IGFA; Jeff is featured in the
book, "Kayak Fishing the Revolution", by Ken Daubert.
Known throughout the kayak fishing community as Rhyno, he owns, and
Rhyno's Guide Service. Seeing a need for a strong rod holder for his big
game fishing adventures, he invented the Rhynobar in 1995
Some of Rhyno's more memorable catches from the kayak include, Striped
Marlin and Roosterfish in Baja (Thanks Jim and Hotel Punta Colorada),
50lb California Halibut, and 50+ lb White Seabass. Jeff has made a real
name for himself for catching Thresher Sharks to 250 lbs, bigger ones
were let go!
Jeff will be guiding kayak fishing adventures from entry level to
advanced in the Los Angeles area, as well as his yearly groups trip to
northern California. He also makes a yearly trip back to the islands
where he guides a few clients.

Howard McKim
Owner Ketchikan Kayak Fishing
A La Jolla Kayak Fishing affiliate
Howard, already a kayak angler, wanted to escape the rat race of California,
so he decided to head north several years ago to where the sport began.
Of course, when it began it was for sustenance not for sport. Spending
time kayak fishing the pristine waters of Alaska for fish like barn
door Halibut, Salmon, Lingcod and a variety of rockfish, Howard wanted
to introduce the area to other kayak fishermen and started Ketchikan
Kayak Fishing. KKF offers private guided kayak fishing tours on the
protected water of Alaska's Inside Passage. The fishing grounds are
surrounded by lush rainforest making it a kayak fishing paradise.
Catching fish truly is a bonus as you explore the rainforest, view
whales, sea lions, and majestic eagles in the place where kayak
fishing was born. KKF provides round trip transportation from anywhere
on the island, top notch fishing gear, rain gear, boots, dry bags and
everything else you need. Ketchikan is only 1.5 hr from Seattle, has
mild weather year round, and offers almost endless wilderness. Quit
dreaming about it and head to the Last Frontier for some kayak fishing!
Howard can be reached via his Web site
YakFishAlaska.com
or as the moderator of our
Northwest Kayak Fishing forum.
